Harry B Pedersen, Ninth Air Force, 406th Fighter Group, 512th Fighter Squadron: 1944 ¹⁵

Second Lieutenant Harry Buch Pedersen (O-810407) was born on 28 September 1923 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, to Emanuel J. and Christine Buch Pedersen. His father was a truck driver for a milk company. Harry had one younger sister.

Harry graduated from South High School, Minneapolis, in 1940 where he was active in Service Guide, Glee Club, and Follies. He worked as a bookkeeper at the Fourth Northwester National Bank was a member of Danish Brotherhood Lodge No. 45 and of Franklin DeMolay.

Harry enlisted in the Army Air Forces on October 14, 1942. He became a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilot and earned his wings and commission as a Second Lieutenant. He was assigned to the 512th Fighter Squadron, 406th Fighter Group, Ninth Air Force.

2 Lt. Pedersen and the 406th Fighter Group shipped off to England on March 13, 1944 to the Army Air Forces station AAF-417 in Ashford, Kent, England. The 406th's missions out of Ashford involved attacking German positions in France, including anti-aircraft sites, supply lines, roads, airfields, railroads, troop and equipment movements, and communication centers. These missions were prior to and following the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944.

On June 18, 1944, 2 Lt. Pedersen, flying P-47D-11RE Thunderbolt No. 42-75581, accompanied by 2 Lt. Arner M Douglas, left AAF-417 on an armed recce mission in which they strafed and bombed targets at Antrain, France, and on their return flight hit more targets north of Avranches and west of St. Lo. As they passed just east of the town of Saint-Jean-de-Daye, both were fired upon by two German gun emplacements. Each of them tried to knock out the guns. 2 Lt. Pedersen called out that he had been hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire, his engine was on fire, and he would have to bail out. At 1,200' his plane burst into a larger flame, his cockpit was filled with smoke, and he opened his canopy to get out. The plane then went into a steep dive and crashed. 2 Lt. Pedersen's parachute did not open fully until 25' above the ground, too late to save him. He was killed near Saint-Jean-de-Daye at 1600 hours on June 18, 1944 behind German lines. He was 20 years old. MACR 6284

2 Lt. Pedersen received the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

2 Lt. Pedersen's remains were recovered and identified in 1957, and he was interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis in Section B, Site 254-N. He is also memorialized on the Walls of the Missing in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, France, which contains the graves of 9,386 American dead. On the Tablets of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed an additional 1,557 names, among them 2 Lt. Pedersen.

Thirteen years ago, on a sunny June morning in France, 2nd Lt. Harry B. Pedersen's ThunderboIt fighter plane crashed to earth to the sound of Nazi anti-aircraft fire.
This past Friday, on a sunny January afternoon in Minneapolis, the lieutenant came home to the sound of an honor guard's rifle fire at Fort Snelling National cemetery.
The 13 years of waiting and wondering were over for Mrs. Christina B. Pedersen, 1110 SE. Fifth street. She knew where her son was. WHEN SHE received notice on Jan. 8 of the finding of her son's body by a German war graves team in France, Mrs. Pedersen was both "shocked" and "so grateful," she said.
The body was found in a grave beside a hedge on a farm named Crillon, just outside La Meauffe Calvados, a small village in Normandy.
American graves registration personnel identified the body by a serial number on the lieutenant's shoulder holster, dental characteristics and his air force insignia.
THE GRAVE was close to where a French farmer reported seeing a United States flier parachute to earth June 18, 1944. The farmer said he was afraid to go to the airman's aid because of German soldiers nearby.
The Pedersen family is not sure whether Lt. Pedersen's death - just 10 days before his 21st birthday - was the result of bailing out too late or because he was wounded. He was flying in support of the allied invasion of Normandy. He came to earth just three miles behind the German Lines.
The Pedersens first learned their son was missing July 1, 1944. The father suffered a stroke shortly after hearing the news and never regained health. He died eight years ago.
ln 1946 a memorial service was held for Lt. Pedersen - who had been a bookkeeper at Fourth Northwestern National bank - in Holy Trinity church in Minneapolis.
She said she never really held any hope that she might see him alive again - but she thought he might have been taken prisoner and somehow been transferred to Russian prison camps.
Mrs. Pedersen said she dreaded living her loss over again this past week in another service.'
But the young air force captain from Fort Meade, Md., who escorted the plain metal casket "was such a great comfort." she said.
Her son's boyhood chum from South high school, the Rev. R. L. Bartsch, came from Milwaukee, Wis., and the Rev. Paul Graf, pastor of Holy Trinity church, led the service among the rows of white markers.
"I feel better now," Mrs. 'Pedersen said. "I can be so I happy and grateful now that I know ... ".
